Guidelines for using make-up on Shabbat

- Our teacher and Rabbi, light of Israel, Rav Ovadia Yosef of blessed memory has taught on his books that any cosmetic material manufactured as an ointment or liquid, which paints the facial skin, such as a lipstick or foundation paste or makeup and mascara, should not be used on Sabbath under any circumstances.
- He nevertheless instructed his students to be lenient concerning makeup powders on Shabbat, and under the following conditions:
- This permission is based on the fact that makeup powder does not last long on one’s face, nor sticks on it. Therefore, make sure that the types of powders will be free of any greasy substance that might cause the material to adhere to the face.
- It is forbidden to blend or mix the powders to any type of creams or ointment.
- Make sure that your face skin is dry and clean of any base material that could keep the makeup powder on the face skin, even if it was on your face from before the Shabbath Eve.
- It’s better to sprinkle the powder on your face with a brush, not with cotton or spongy, to make sure not to incur into the prohibition of dyeing on shabbath.
- It is better to have a special brush for Shabbath, for “Ovdeen dehol”, and also to avoid the remains of makeup and creams which would be forbidden on Saturday.
- Refrain from creating new shades of color by mixing up different powder colors.
- If the powder dried up and got lumpy, no problem crumbling it back and using it on Shabbath.

We are here to develop the best products for you. The only item we have not yet developed is mascara. The mascara’s role is to curl the eyelash and coat it with a material that gives volume and preserves the result. Because of this, the material must be a thick liquid that dries after a few minutes.
Shabbes products are 100% powder-based and contain no liquid. This is because on the Sabbath, it is forbidden to smear or apply coatings. Therefore, there is no possibility to develop a Mehadrin-approved mascara.
We are working on several solutions. In the meantime, we suggest that you dip a little of the dark eyeliner powder you purchased (which also serves as a black pencil) into our eyebrow comb, and brush your eyelashes with it as well. While this action won’t curl them, it will add dimension and length.
We’ll reveal a secret to you: If you apply our makeup products over any serum/moisturizer you have at home – you’ll get very high durability. But then… you’ve lost the ability to use them properly on Sabbath.
Why? For two reasons. First, because of the prohibition of spreading (melachat mamereach). Our makeup is made of 100% powder, so it essentially “skips” the spreading prohibition. The moment you place it on a moist substance – you’ll violate this prohibition.
And the second reason is: because of the prohibition of dyeing (melachat tzoveah). The whole point of Shabbes Makeup is that it is not long-lasting. Since there is no prohibition of dyeing something that is not permanent. Our makeup dissipates after a few hours, and it has passed all the tests that define it as makeup that does not remain on the skin for a long time and is permitted for Mehadrin observance on Sabbath.
This way you can apply makeup without concern, and refresh your makeup at any time.
